Look out over there. Duo nudged at Heeros shoulder. Heero turned to look at him, but Duo had his collar turned up against the fierce wind, and Heero couldnt see all of his companions face. He turned back to gaze out over the view from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building. It was a quiet day for tourists, maybe because of the cold weather, or maybe theyd just chosen the time of their visit well. Its magnificent. It was worth coming up to the Observation floor. Duo nodded and muttered half into his fleecy scarf. Told you so. You can see it all. Heero gritted a smile against the wind: his cheeks were icy. The city? Uh-huh. Duo grunted agreement. The city. The action. The people. Our place. Heero frowned. Our place? We dont have a place, Duo. Duo nodded, dismissing Heeros confusion. Not yet, we dont. But when we do Heero frowned even more. In the city? I dont know about that. Theres the traffic to consider the high rentals... the noise He heard a snorting sound beside him and turned back to face Duo. The other young man was shaking inside his heavy coat. Hey, whats the joke? Why are you laughing? Duos cheeks were pink, and not just from the chill. My oh-so-not-casual comment about getting a place. Heero could see Duo's wide grin, visible above the upturned collar. You seem more worried about the cost and the hassle of living in the city than you are about What? Heero scowled a little, but his eyes were on Duos. He could see a sparkle of mischief in the blue depths and something more. Than about us being together long-term. Living together. And now Duos eyes looked away, somewhere over the East River. He was still smiling but his focus had slipped inwards. Of course, Heero replied, quietly. Duo stiffened beside him, though he didnt look back yet. Of course what? Of course well get a place, said Heero. He reckoned his oh-so-not-casual tone was pitched equally effectively. Of course well be together. He leant forward on the railing and peered out somewhere down along 5th Avenue. Could be anywhere. Doesnt really matter, does it? Duo shifted beside him and joined in looking at the view. Their elbows knocked together, but Heero didnt move away. Nah. It doesnt. Duos pleasure spilled out around the sparse words. You said it. His hip nudged up against Heeros. Heero glanced across and saw Duos gloved hand resting on his forearm. Heero? Duo sounded wistful. You know? Heero stared back over the horizon and imagined the millions of lives going on below them, accompanied by lights and noise and activity and drama. And warmth, of course. And then he felt the pressure of Duos hand on his arm and he smiled, contentedly. Yes, he said. I know. ~ * ~
